The first American fighter-bombers F-35 starts to enter service with the Turkish air force in 2018, Prime Minister of Turkey, Binali Yildirim on Tuesday. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
Earlier, the head of the Department of Turkish defense industries Ismail Demir said that Turkey created the first center for the production, maintenance and installation of engines for the F-35.
“We decided to strengthen the capacity of our defense industry. We will develop 26 projects. In 2018, the first batch of F-35 will arrive in Turkey. More than half of their parts will be produced in Turkey, and here will be their installation,” said yıldırım, speaking at a meeting of the parliamentary faction of the ruling Party of justice and development.
He added that by 2023 Turkey aims to maximally translate the army on a domestic armament. Investment in this sector, according to the Prime Minister amounted to 35 billion dollars over 14 years.
Program for the creation of Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II has already cost about half a trillion dollars — this is the most expensive program of weapons production in history. Developers are faced with numerous problems, spent hundreds of billions of dollars more than planned, and was late with the introduction of the aircraft into operation for at least seven years.
